Di then came over and told me she had found another
Selenite in a pocket and wanted me to crack it out
also. So I headed over and made short work out of it.
I was just gonna "pop" it out since it was just
Selenite. This woman of mine had me hoping all over
the place! We use the " search and Destroy " method,
she walks around searching for the biggest boulders
for me to crack, and then I get to swing the Steel! I
didn't even notice that it wasn't Selenite till I
unwrapped it at home. At first I thought it was
Celestite, but am now thinking Anhydrite. What was
even better was that there were clear Fluorites on the
backside !
I was just finishing up when Di came up and said
that Chris had just found his first purple Fluorite!
So I packed up the mineral specimens already gleaned
and headed down with hi hopes. Dale and Barb did also.
Dale did find a few pieces of Fluorite there also, but
I continued to get skunked. I was finding lots of dolo
pockets but that was it. Then about a half hour later
Di found this lovely yellow cube of Fluorite just
laying on the ground
WOW, and I Still haven't found any Fluorite yet! Not
even crumbs! I started heading back, continually
searching, to were I had started.
I got back to the start of the pile and seen Dan
there. He is the Wayne County, N.Y. field trip leader.
He had just found a gorgeous purple phantom Fluorite
in a vug of dolomite crystals with a double terminated
Calcite next to it. So I then concentrated, once
again, on my search for that elusive Fluorite! Then I
found one! A nice one inch cube in a pocket of
Dolomite.
The pocket was full of mud, so I didn't even notice
that it was blue until I washed it off at home.
It was wedged under another boulder so I borrowed a
prybar from Dan ( with his help also! ) and managed to
free the specimen. While doing so, I noticed a nice
one inch Purple Fluorite on Dolomite just under the
first Fluorite on the rock under it!
WOW, I finally found the elusive Fluorite. And to
make it even better, when I got home and washed
everything off, I found out that I had brought home
blue, purple, yellow, and clear Fluorite! Below are
some random quarry shots of me, Chris, and Kathryn.
Shortly after finding the Fluorites the quarry time was
up. Collecting was from 7 am till 12. We said our
goodbye's and made it home around 6 pm. And also,
thanks to my wife, Dianne, for all the Quarry shots
and for driving the last 2 hours home in a
thunderstorm so that I could take a nap! I was whooped,
my hands are still sore when I wake, from breaking
rock! And then I smile when I think of what I managed
to find.............
