While I was digging out my hole, Chrissy came over and announced that she had uncovered some very large calcite boulders that were full of apatite crystals. She had already recovered quite a pile of loose apatite crystals from the soils surrounding the boulders. The problem was that that the huge rocks were much to large for her to move, so she asked if I would help her. After I pretty much reached the bottom of my small pocket, I went over with heavy arsenal to do battle with the big rocks. I was able to move some of the boulders with my large mattock and prybar, at least to the point where I could whack them up with hammer and chisel. I soon found out that recovering whole apatite crystals in matrix was very difficult as they were generally fractured and the calcite pretty much broke where it wanted to - and usually across apatite crystals. But, we were able to extract a few keepers before the day was over.

After beating on the boulders for a couple hours, we finally called it a day and headed back to camp for food and to rest up for the next day. Opal was especially pleased with herself having gotten to spend the entire day chasing chipmunks.

Report continued . . . . . . .
