A hydrothermal event occurs when groundwater deep beneath the earth's surface becomes heated by metamorphic or igneous actions and infiltrates pre-existing rocks through fractures. As the hydrothermal water cools, dissolved elements and minerals can precipitate to form fracture filling veins and secondary minerals along faults, fractures and in rock voids.
