In the lithospheric scheme of plate tectonics, a terrane is a piece of crust "riding" atop any given tectonic plate. A terrane can accrete (be added) to another terrane when the tectonic plate of which it is a part collides with the tectonic plate containing the other terrane. The boundaries of terranes are usually represented by crustal faults.
